duet

mom and i have spent two days and nights in this bed together. we're both recovering from mean doctors doing mean things to us. so we like to sit in this bed and play on our computers and talk to each other. when someone else decides to walk in the room, we like to fuss to them. and then they bring us stuff. good times.

Feelin' just as faded as my jeans...

Carrie has already been brainwashed to think that "Dok loves her the best" and to always want Dok to hold her. I think the 1/2 of her life that CJ didn't spend cleaning, she spent doing this.

You knew this day long before You made me out of dirt.

Breakfast conversation at the pastor's home:
(the boys were having their monthly ration of REAL grape juice)
Joshua: Mom, you know what I just figured out?
Mom: What Josh?
Joshua: I dont really like this grape juice very much and I KNOW I dont like wine so I dont think I should become a Christian. What would I drink at Lord's Supper?
Jonathan: Joshua, what happens if Christ CALLS you to be HIS? No man can refuse when God calls him! If you're chosen then, YOU ARE CHOSEN!
Joshua: Yeah, that's the part I HAVENT figured out yet!
David: Just plug your nose and gulp real fast.

Dirk is so proud...

All things being equal, her beauty was not her fault...

Have you ever seen a cuter 6-month old?? Admittedly, she has some strong competition but I don't feel bad since she's the only 6-month old at present. I took her to have portraits made at Picture People today... She was a DOLL and smiled beautifully for each shot, but the photographer (and I use that title loosely) was less than professional and consequently botched most of the poses. Oh well. We'll go back every month until we get a portrait we like.

Cheer, Cheer for ol' Notre Dame!!

Can I get a 'Whoop Whoop' for the Blue & Gold?!?! ND has won two road games in a row and gone from being unranked to (hopefully) number 12 or 13, not to mention the sweet joy of beating the Michigan Wolverines who we hate almost as much as USC. Only ten more games to go, and my money says they'll take it to the national championship this year! Anyone else care to wager?

It's over now--the Music of the Night!!!

She actually did it!!!!! It's not fair.....i have no one to borrow clothes or shoes or makeup brushes from. But i have to say i love her "Place"....it's fancy shmancy.
Note Abby's sad expression.....she's sad, too.
Well, i might be able to forgive her because right now she's probably too tired to care...it would be useless because she's been at Kelly every day for like the past 5 days. Good work, CJ.

Another trip around the sun.

Isaac Robinson Russell is 4 today! HAPPY BIRTHDAY BIG IKE! We cant believe 4 years have flown by...Ike is such a blessing to our family. He is forever the dreamer. He is a hoarder of small trinkets and gives the best hugs of anyone I know. He says that now that he is 4 he doesnt want to live w/ us anymore. He wants to live in a "hideout w/ flashlights" w/ his best friend and cousin WES and "only eat food we like and play w/ lots of small toys". We told him we would like to keep him for a little while longer b/ we love him so much! He said, "okay but can I have a new flashlight?" GREEN IS HIS FAVOURITE COLOUR AND HE'S OUR FAVOURITE IKE!

I may not know right now, but I will find my way

Henry David Slaughter is 3 today! We're very glad he made it thus far :-) He is thrilled to be able to hold up his 3 fingers, but keeps asking where his cake is (coming on Thurs. as all birthday cakes do). I can't believe its been 3 years since he showed up at our house, our first home birth. He's been fun and busy ever since, keeping his Dad and Mom on their toes every waking moment. Happy Birthday big boy! -- Mommy (Kristen)

we rationed our tears inside...

I have not figured out what to write. I am not known for being a writer. I am a proud daughter and sister to great writers but know full well I am not one. Yesterday some of us went to one of the MANY evacuee sites on KellyUSA. We passed out Bibles, giftcards, babydolls, toys, books, and homemade cookies. Our little church bought as much as we could and it was gone in just a few minutes. Our bags of things ran out so much faster than our hearts. I wanted to be like the woman whose bottle never ran out of oil. The faces of the grateful, the ones still in shock, the children who were squealing w/ delight over such little things, the old man who half-smiled at the pack of cards I handed him (as if he were remembering something from long ago), the mother's face of relief when I offered her a stroller: they are burning my mind.
The signs posted in the long hallways are just as painful to recall: TODD ______, PLEASE CALL YOUR FAMILY: (houston #) WE DONT KNOW WHICH CITY YOU ARE IN! WE CAN COME GET YOU!
HAVE YOU SEEN MY DAUGHTER (description and name)? SHE IS 14 AND NEEDS HER MEDICATION. PLEASE CALL ME IN BATON ROUGE SHELTER...
I talked to a woman who had stood in line for hours at the free phones set up by SBC. She said she called every single number she knows: friends, family, coworkers, anyone. No answers. She said she only has family and friends in Louisiana and Mississippi. No one is there.
So many asked us "which way to the Missing Persons room?" we lost count.
Dirk gave one family a box of things our church had put together. He was in the process of explaining what was in it when the lady stopped him and asked, "Is there a Bible in it? Yes? Hallelujah, Jesus!" She didnt seem to care about the gift card.
There are so many people there doing good things. These peoples' practical needs have been met for the short-term. What they need now is spiritual help, simple diversions, and help for making a long-term plan. If you can go, GO. If you can send money, SEND. But PRAY for those hurting and those trying to make a difference, no matter how small.
Dirk went back this morning w/ our two oldest sons. They took loads more toys, games, dolls, etc. It was gone%2

...whatever private oceans we can conjure up for free...

This was at Haystack Rock, Cannon Beach.
There were 4 castles built, but this was the big dog. All 7 cousins together.
Dave was very proud of the baby salmon he "caught" on shore.
Mommy and boys.
The Slaughters have returned home after a great vacation on the Oregon coast with Dave's family. There were 13 of us, and we stayed in a great house a couple blocks off the beach. The weather was perfect, almost no rain and the coast was beautiful. We had fun with Dave's sister Stephanie, her husband Rob, and their kids Robbie, Olivia and Victoria. The cousins all finally got to know each other and they played so well together. Kites were flown, sand was eaten, castles were built, great memories made. And just in case anyone reading this wanted to see more, I have a disc with approx. 500 vacation pics :-) I've also posted more on the Slaughter blog, so go there to see some different pics. God is good, and we are grateful for the chance to have such a great trip. Everyone needs to go to the ocean! --Kristen

Wont you lie down in the September grass?

umm. I wish I could. I am typing lest I fall asleep and my children become prey to the television, gamecube, and the hot fudge sauce in the frig. Any of you been up w/ 4 coughing children all night? Seeing as how hardly anyone has 4 (much less 6!) children these days, Im guessing the answer is NO. I am betting that even my own saintly mother never was up w/ 4 children at once and she had 9! D and I love having 6 children but its weeks like this one where we look at each other bleary-eyed and ask, "Who signed us up for this"? --dirksgirl
